California To Pilot Automated Noise Regulation Cameras

California To Pilot Automated Noise Regulation Cameras

Well Californians, we’ve got some news for you. If being out in your car for a quick cruise to Krispy Kreme to pick up those delicious glazed doughnuts and being stopped by the police for allegedly having a car too loud wasn't enough, a new statewide program can make it much worse in the coming years.

Six undisclosed cities will pilot a new program starting in 2023 to monitor noise levels via traffic cameras. These advanced cameras will activate when the noise reaches a certain decibel level, and then a highly sophisticated camera will target the car, snap a photo of your plate and boom, ticket in the mailbox.

Now, there are some caveats to this bill. There will be signage before the zones to notify travelers that the sound will be monitored. First time offenders will receive a warning, with subsequent offenders receiving a fine. The pilot program is slated to run until 2027 and the money from fines will go towards infrastructure maintenance.

The exhaust laws in California are not new to anyone that lives here. The law will maintain the same 95 decibels for your exhaust system. The issues lie in a few aspects of the program.

  • One, many standard vehicles right off the showroom floor are already manufactured above the 95 decibels legal in California. This poses a hardship for people that have no idea about the exhaust level of that new ride they saved up for. Not only that, but you now get into economic issues in which these vehicles will not sell the same in California.
  • Second, aftermarket sales and performance shops will suffer the loss of money from purchases off these items.
  • And third, well third is simply just an issue of personal belongings. It's my car, my choice!

For decades, the modifying of a vehicle has been ingrained in California culture. Cars have always been at the root of a California pastime that has a deep history. For many, the continued assault on car modifications is just disheartening.

I have seen many petitions for the exhaust laws in California and please, be sure to sign any and all of them, as well as reach out to your local officials. But let's not forget to continue to educate our fellow neighbors and car enthusiasts. Some.of the reason we are here is due to the current takeovers, street racing, and blatant disrespect for the culture. There has never been a reason to fly by the quiet neighborhood and prove to the crickets in the middle of the night that your car can pop and burble.

Speaking of car enthusiasts, be sure to come out and support a Secret Society event. In which we aim to continually support our small businesses, charities, and provide a safe environment for real culture enthusiasts.
